Back to BlogWhy Reading Still Matters in the Age of AI
Artificial intelligence can write stories in seconds. But that doesn't make reading any less important. In fact, it may make it more important than ever.
Artificial intelligence is changing almost everything around us. It writes code, creates illustrations, composes music, and can generate an entirely new bedtime story in just a few seconds. It's no surprise that many parents have started asking the same question: if AI can create stories instantly, will reading still matter in ten or twenty years?
We believe the answer is yes. In fact, we believe reading may become even more important.
The reason is simple. Reading has never been valuable because stories were difficult to produce. Stories have always been valuable because of what happens inside a child's mind while experiencing them. AI can generate words, but it cannot imagine on behalf of a child. That part will always belong to us.
For centuries, every new technology has changed the way stories are told. We moved from oral storytelling to printed books, from books to audiobooks, and from libraries to e-readers. None of these innovations made stories less important. They simply made them more accessible. Artificial intelligence is just the next step in that evolution.
When a child watches a movie, almost every detail has already been decided. The castle has a specific shape, the dragon has a specific voice, and the hero wears a specific costume. Reading works differently. The words provide the foundation, but the child builds the rest. Every forest, every magical creature, and every adventure exists first in their imagination. Two children can read exactly the same story and picture two completely different worlds. That is something no screen can ever replace.
Ironically, AI may help us return to this kind of storytelling.
One of the biggest challenges parents face isn't convincing children to read. It's finding stories that truly excite them. Every child has different interests. One dreams about dinosaurs, another about space exploration, while someone else wants adventures with dragons or pirates. Traditional publishing can't create a unique book for every child. AI finally can.
Imagine a bedtime story where your daughter becomes the captain of a pirate ship. Or your son teams up with his favorite stuffed bear to save a magical kingdom. The goal isn't to replace books with technology. The goal is to make children so emotionally invested in a story that they can't wait to discover what happens on the next page.
That's exactly how we think about AI at Shally.
We don't see artificial intelligence as a replacement for authors or imagination. We see it as a creative tool that helps every child discover stories they genuinely want to read. Technology should remove barriers between children and books, not become the center of attention itself.
The future of reading won't look exactly like the past, and that's okay. Stories have always evolved alongside humanity. What matters is that they continue to inspire curiosity, empathy, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
At Shally, we believe AI shouldn't replace storytelling. It should help more children fall in love with it.
